Quotes for the Soul: 9-11

“Commending the victims to almighty God’s mercy, I implore his strength upon all involved in rescue efforts and in caring for the survivors.” — Pope John Paul II, Sept. 11.

It was the first semester of my senior year of high school and I was in English class. The principal made an announcement I didn’t listen to and then the TV in our classroom began broadcasting what was happening. I sat on top of my desk for some reason. I was really intrigued, terrified and confused and couldn’t turn away. I immediately thought of all my family in NY. My grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins and wondered if they were OK. I wasn’t one of the cool kids with a cell phone so I couldn’t call my mom to ask or get any sort of update. I recall going home after school and watching the footage over and over and over. The sight of the 2nd plane hitting the towers still gives me chills to this day and every single time I hear a plane flying over head while at home I fear it may be another attack.

On this day, I pray for the families still mourning and for those still suffering the residuals of that day. I pray for the troops overseas who are fighting a seemingly never ending battle and as cheesy as this may sound I truly pray for peace. God Bless!

Love Talks: Bond

Jerry and Heather met in college with Jerry laying eyes on Heather first at a fraternity picnic. He was admittedly hesitant to approach Heather because she seemed different from the other girls he had seen on campus. Heather, with a sweater draped around her shoulder, had no idea Jerry was digging both her and her classy style. They were later introduced by a mutual friend at a party at the International Ballroom. Upon meeting him, Heather was equally impressed by Jerry’s style and confidence. Dressed to impress in a suit, he walked up to her and said, “Hi, I am Jerry Boone!” They exchanged numbers and the rest was history.  Almost eighteen years later and a beautiful baby girl to boot, this couple’s bond is tighter than ever.

When did you know that you loved your spouse?

Jerry: “Right around the time my old man started getting sick she was always just there. I could have gotten help from friends but didn’t need to because she was just there. That’s when I knew, around that time.”

Heather: “I don’t know. It was just weird. We were always around each other so I can’t just say exactly when. Like he said, his dad was getting sick so we were coming to Houston a lot. My dad was also sick so we had that connection.”  Continue reading “Love Talks: Bond”

Moonlight Conversations: Moments

The moon is full tonight. Well at least it appears so visually. I am finally able to place my head in a clear space. I can now once again admire the beauty of my favorite masterpiece that I’ve admittedly neglected in recent months. Neglected because my focus was not on the present. Neglected because my thoughts were everywhere but within my own existence. But tonight I see you so clearly, Mr. Moon. I appreciate your beauty, your light and your grandiose presence. Your quiet stillness still enchants me and has a way of centering me. Oh how I love nights like these. Nights where my mind is completely free of worry or much else. Only thoughts and visions of you Mr. Moon and my incidental connection with the many beings that may have paused, if even for a moment, to also admire your beautiful existence tonight.
